Shellal Southdown Stud, registered stud number 2427 was established in 2014, with top genetics purchased from one of Australia's most influential and successful Studs of the time, Chandpara Stud at Tylden.
Since then, we have grown the stud and established ourselves in the Southdown show ring by exhibiting our stud stock and allowing us the comparison of how our stud animals stand up to other breeders, and what needs to improve for the Southdowns to reinvent themselves in the prime lamb sector for commercial breeders as well as breeding stud stock. And we are very pleased with what type of Southdown we are breeding today because we identified what needed improvement in the breed. Our aim going forward was simple; to breed structurally correct sheep that have excellent body shape for vital meat yield in the high-end cuts (hindquarters) whilst maintaining correct structure and building on performance data without compromising conformation. Sounds simple, but it took hard work and a real look into our genetic pool to find the pathway to breeding better stud animals. Hindquarter shape was looked at strongly as we thought Southdowns needed to find the muscle and shape on the outside of the hind leg rather than just through the back end. Hindquarter shape is vital and in an animal is determined by genetic predisposition, muscular development and fat reserves - not all animals have this hindquarter muscling, and one has to be selective when choosing the right genetics (animals) within a joining program. We stuck to our guns and now we are breeding the type of animal that the prime lamb industry needs and also the seedstock breeders to improve their breeding animals. Southdown Health - We have currently undergone a whole breeding ewe and stud sire Gaucher testing program, where all these Southdowns were tested. We also did some cold tolerance testing and all came back AA which is is very high and well above average. Shellal debuted in the show ring in 2016 - Showing at the Sheep and Wool Show and Ballarat Sheep Show with Outstanding Results. In 2026 we hit the show ring again and exhibited at the Sheep and Wool Show, Sheepvention and the Elite in Bendigo with a team of 4 rams and 3 ewes. We appreciate the positive feedback from clients and fellow breeders on what we are achieving here at Shellal with our breeding program to improve the Southdown breed. . |
