Shellal Poll Dorset Stud was established in 1966 and over the years has grown to become one of Australia's most influential studs in Australia. The family run seedstock enterprise is located near Hawkesdale in South West Victoria and is registered with the Australian Poll Dorset Association Inc, flock number 1126. Recently in 2014, Shellal also became a registered Southdown Stud with the purchase of stud ewes and a stud ram from one of Australia's leading and very successful Southdown Studs, Chandpara Stud at Tylden.
In recent years, we have maintained a strong Poll Dorset ewe base with joining only specially selected stud breeding ewes. We aim to breed strong lines of consistently productive bloodlines that meet todays market and are ready for future commercial lamb trends.
Our strong line of ewes and excellent stud sire selection over the years are producing meatier rams with high growth and muscle whilst maintaining a structurally sound confirmation. We only run stud sheep on the property and have done so for over 45 years now, thus enabling us to run a clean healthy flock.
We have always exhibited our stud stock in the show ring and believe it is a great way of showcasing our product to fellow breeders and prime lamb producers. It is also the only way of really comparing stud stock visually and it gives us (as a breeder and others watching) a good measure stick. Our stud stock have been awarded Champion and Reserve Champions over the years at many shows we have attended; including the Australian Sheep and Wool Show, Adelaide Royal, Hamilton Sheepvention, Ballarat Sheep Show and more recently the largest Poll Dorset show in Australia, the Australasian Dorset Championships Show and Sale held at Bendigo at the end of August each year.
In 2014 Shearwell Australia came on board with us and became our studs major sponsor. We thank the Shearwell Team for their support and look forward to a long association with them. Not only do we use Shearwell RFID SET tags, we also find the retention rate to be better and the tags are easy to use and much faster to apply in the ears due to their one piece action. All tags used at Shellal are now incorporated with EID, they are light and durable and can be used from birth. Shearwell SET tags are NLIS-Accredited. EID works well in a seedstock business and was incorporated as a lifetime ewe management tool within our stud whilst also monitoring our flock rams performance, from birth to sale day.
